Why I'm quitting - at least for now...
The final straw is what appears to be my total inability to renew my domain name (not this one...at least not yet!) through Google. Way back in the day, I purchased this domain and one other when I started blogs through Blogger. It was super easy, there was no problem with getting the right custom domain name attached to the right blog - what could be better? Well, over the years, the big G has made what to me are incomprehensible and inexplicable changes and I can't keep up. Nor do I want to. So I quit. I have so many better things to do with my time.
Now what?
For the time being, The Best 50 Years will remain as is. I'm just walking away but I'm not taking it down. After all, one of the reasons I posted here was so that I had an easy way to find certain info again. Anyway, this domain name is good until September so maybe by then, I can figure out where to go to renew. As for the one that expires in a few days? Well, I've decided I don't even care. I think it's served its purpose and I'm ok with letting it go.
9/10/14 UPDATE - Beings the domain successfully auto-renewed and I've been away long enough I don't hate it anymore AND I have a few things to say again, I'm back to blogging...
At least for today...
Oh wow, Crystal. I’ll miss your posts, but I’ve got to say I totally understand where you’re coming from.
ReplyDeleteSomething as simple as owning your own domain and writing when the urge hits shouldn’t be complicated. Unfortunately, Google pretty much owns the web.
I still blog from time to time on my more obscure blogs. I think I’m the only one who reads my posts, but that’s okay. I blog because it’s the one place where I can write something and find it later. Too many times I write step-by-step instructions on how to fix a problem only to lose it on my hard drive when I need them. For that purely selfish reason, I continue to blog.
Life is too short to allow Google to frustrate us. I’ll miss your posts, but I do have your email address, so Google won’t stand in the way of our communications.
I’m wishing you all the best!
Thanks for chiming in, Felicia - just about everything I know about writing online, I learned from you and really value the friendship we've developed over the years. I may post from time to time for the exact reason you stated - it's the one foolproof way I can keep track of something I may want to revisit. I also may find that I miss it so don't intend to pull the plug completely. But for now, it's just become too frustrating and not a good use of my time.
ReplyDeleteKeep in touch!
I thot I had subscribed to this blog but this post about you stopping was the first one I received in several years. Not your fault i'm sure. I was without a puter for a while and now and then only receive internet sporadically (thanks to a neighbor who allow me to use their line when not busy). I just wanted to let you know it was nice meeting you on NJFM and lets meet there with Felicia for coffee sometimes....LOL
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Joni
Thanks for stopping by, Joni. Sounds like you've had some computer challenges. Funny you'd get the post now. Must be because I updated it?. Anyway, I was so done with blogging in June but maybe now have some energy and interest in it again. We shall see!
